The Good, the Bad & the Ugly (2010)
THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY is a remake of the film by Leone, a thorough and strict frame-by-frame re-filming of the seminal production, with the added peculiarity that in this new version, there appear no images of people in the film at all, an absence that is patent from the crossing out in the title. The only trace of human presence is limited to the soundtrack of the Leone film, maintained in place, without alterations, with the original sounds and dialogues, and that puts cinematographic culture and the spectactor’s memory to the test. Times in black correspond to parts filmed originally in the studio. Without characters onscreen, shot changes, camera movements and frames seem to lack motivation, as if they were obeying incomprehensible instructions. The empty space therefore becomes the real lead part in the movie. Landscapes and sets, that usually constitute the background over which the story takes place, become close-ups, therefore demanding greater attention.
